269. Why Do We Need Water?
Have you ever thought about water? Almost all living and
nonliving organisms need water to survive. Water is colorless, tasteless and
odorless, but why do we need it? A human being can go a month without food, but
only a week without water. Water helps digest food, and cleanse our body. In
fact, every year, $16 billion are spent just for water bottles. Not only do
human beings need it, so do animals and plants. Animals have the same needs as
humans, but why do plants need water?
Plants need water for photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a
process that plants do to make food. In one tiny drop of water, there are
billions of bacteria and viruses. There are also small animals in one drop of
water. In the world, there are 70% or 7/10 of water on the Earth’s surface.
Only 3 ½ is fresh water, which contains little or no salt. Scientists have
found out that the amount of water in the ocean is decreasing, so, scientists
are trying to find planets that have water or have traces of water on the
surface.
Humans drink about 58 gallons a year. A typical baby has
78% water in its body. An adult has 55-60% of water in their body. Water is
very fascinating because it is a solid when it is frozen, a liquid, and a gas
when it is vaporized. We use water every day, to wash our hands to bathe, to
drink water and in the summer to have a water slide. Water is very important in
our lives, so we should save as much of it as soon as possible.
