381. The Nile River

The Nile River

A 4000-mile river floods every year, giving food to hundreds and stops unwanted invaders. The Nile River shaped the Ancient Egyptian society by providing a natural defense and fertile land. First, the Nile River helped protect the Ancient Egyptians from enemies. According to document C, the Nile river provided a natural defense so the Ancient Egyptians didn’t have to use any of the resources to build fortifications for their civilization.

Since they saved military resources, they could focus on getting food, and trading with other villages. Next, the Nile River provided fertile land for the Ancient Egyptians to grow crops. According to document E, when the Nile River floods, it deposits silt and creates a new layer of topsoil every year. Since the topsoil was rich in organic nutrients and nitrogen, it helps crops grow tremendously. The Nile River flooding and depositing silt made a surplus of crops, so the ancient Egyptians could expand to making weapons, clothes, pottery, and jewelry. The Nile River shaped the ancient Egyptians society greatly by protecting the ancient Egyptians and providing fertile soil.
