The story, Island of the Blue Dolphins written by Scott O'Dell is an intriguing historical fiction book about Karana, Ramo her brother, Ulape her sister, Ranto her friend, Chief Chowig and the rest of her tribe.
Karana who is the main character in the book, is brave, kind and forgiving. She is kind to all animals and very brave in the face of danger. She is also very forgiving; she forgives the Aleuts from killing the otter which rests on the kelp beds. Moreover, the story has a very happy ending though she faced some difficulties before the rescue.
Karana is brave in many ways in the story. For instance, when Karana was tracking down the devilfish, in great risk, she successfully killed it with Ranto. Another reason is that when Karana was hunting down Ranto, she shot a sphere, but she soon regretted it, and nursed Ranto back to health. She also took one of the canoe and she set sail to find the new land where her people had gone, only to return 2 days after. Karana decides to stay at the Island of the Blue Dolphin.
My opinion about Island of the Dolphin is that the author Scott O’Dell provides description that helps the reader to visualize the culture and difficulties that the tribes have encountered during that period.
In the end, Karana is rescued by the priest, Father Gonzales and others and is clothed to a new dress that covers her from neck to toe and “sailed on the tenth day”. Karana thought of all her animals and at Won-a-nee her pet otter, “and the little red fox that would scratch in vain at my fence”. Karana lived a happy life and is buried on a hill near the Santa Barbara Mission.
