185. Brian’s Winter

                                                     - H A R I N I

“Help! Help! Help! I’ve been stranded in the forest!” thought Brian, he was past that, it had been 54 days and he still got scared. Disgusted. He was disgusted at himself, after all these days, he was still frightened. Upset, he went through the survival pack and found a transmitter. He finally felt as though he was surrounded by warmth. He saw a switch and he fidgeted with it, he moved it up and down it for about what seemed to be 25 minutes. Aggravated, he threw the transmitter on the ground and began eating the 4-course-meal which was beef with potatoes. He continued the meal, saving it of course, but now and then he felt a small cold chill in the air.

Winter. Winter, he thought. I should have seen it coming, I should have been prepared.” He shouted at himself, after a while, he started to make priorities. Food. The lake would freeze in a couple of days, and the fish would not be reachable. He took the fishing rod, and began to catch fish. He thought of a bear, it would eat fish, a lot of fish, and hibernate. Hibernate. There was that word Hibernate, meaning a very long sleep. He was scared, what if he woke up in the middle of winter and he had nothing to eat, what would he do? He tossed that idea in the trash and began focusing on fishing. A couple of hours passed and he found that he had caught at least 15 fish, maybe even 20.

When he was heading back to his shelter, he faced a big problem. Where would he store the food. He remembered that one time he and his mother went on a vacation and when they came back, the whole house smelled like fish, and that was because his mother had left the fish outside. He was thinking of what to do when he got an idea. He went outside and felt that it was cold outside. He took all the fish and he places the fish on the ground, just like a refrigerator would be cold. He went out to hunt for some deer or elk. To his surprise, he found 2 deer and he took out his rifle and began to shoot. He looked up, half expecting to find a dead deer, instead he saw a very angry one. He ran back to his shelter and he fell asleep, right there on the ground outside.

Brian suddenly jerked awake. He didn't know what woke him, but, when he opened his eyes, he knew why.  Snow. There was Snow. Back at home, Snow would be called fun. But not here. To Brian, it would be called danger. Danger. He hurried back to his shelter and this time, he got prepared. He got his rifle, knife, and bow and arrow and went outside to hunt some deer.

He saw it. He saw the deer. It was walking in the bushes, eating the berries. He took aim and fired. Missed. He let go of another one. He hit the deer. He went over and he tried to carry it back, but he saw that it was too heavy so he cut out the middle and he dragged it to his shelter. At his shelter, he cut the flesh of the deer. And he began to eat it when he knew that he would have to save some. He went outside to put the meat out on the snow when. His foot went inside the snow and he couldn't even walk!!

He was scared. He went inside and began to take the coat off the deer when he realized that he didn't know how to skin a deer. He remembered that his mom used to skin fish. It might be the same thing! He began to skin the deer and when he was done, he washed the coat in the snow and he put it on. “Not Bad!” He said. He went outside and got some rocks and leaves. He put them on the shelter, to make it warmer. He then decided to make a bed. He got some leaves, rocks and mud and he stacked them on top of each other. He later made a rock pillow which is a pillow, but, made from a rock.

He got pieces of wood and he built a small camp fire inside, he worried that the camp would catch fire, so he got the leftover pieces of the deer and he carved out a funnel. He placed it on the fire and it was perfect!!Brian was happy. He was prepared for his first winter!! He grabbed his fish and began to eat, he soon fell asleep. Brian woke up. The air fell warm, hat winter ended, had he slept through the whole winter? Maybe so. He went outside and found that the snow had melted. He went outside and saw that it was cold in certain parts. He knew that the snow ad ended in this part of the forest but in other parts, the snow was continuing. He started to go outside, when he realized that he had thrown the transmitter on the ground!! He went to pick it up when he saw that it was turned off!! He turned it on, and he began to look for any signs of activity. He heard a small gruff voice saying, Hello, is this Brian? We found you!! Stay there, do not move!!!

Brian fell asleep, but, he woke by the flashing lights of the helicopter. He is now safe and sound with his parents back at home. But, now and then, he looks out into the forest and thinks of the time he had in the forest.
